I've never had any problems with buffering or stuttering even with 192k/24b files, although there is the occasional hiccup which I suspect plagues any digital distribution system. I use iPeng on my iPhone and iPad for remote control of any of the endpoints or simply listening via headphones on either device, knowing that I'm not getting hi res because of the constraints on the Apple devices. And for my HiFi system in the living room, I went down the path of using a Pi display with a Jivelite enabled providing USB output to the DAC. For example, I have a RPi Zero and a JustBoom DAC Zero in a little box connected to an older receiver in the garage. I run PiCorePlayer on a variety of RPi endpoints with various output configurations, depending on the location. The same RPi also does double duty as an endpoint. I run Logitech Media Server (LMS) on a RPi 3B+ which accesses the music stored on the NAS. I use both Ethernet and WiFi for streaming to the endpoints. It's more about keeping things organized. I use XLD to rip CDs that I own and have a script that adds them to the NAS and the iTunes library even though I don't really use it any more. I store both my music and video library on a QNAP NAS which also has a native Plex app. I've considered PlexAmp, but my current system works so well, I've been reluctant to mess with it.
